Beef Jamaican Patties Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 250 grams ground beef
  • Puff pastry sheets
  • Egg wash: 1 egg + 1 tbsp water
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 & ½ tsp chili powder
  • ½ tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tbsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp paprika powder
  • ½ tsp nutmeg powder (optional)
  • ½ beef broth cubes (optional)
  • ¼ tsp sugar
  • 1 small- sized onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ tsp ground pepper
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil

HOW TO MAKE:

  1. Pour and heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. When the oil gets hot enough, saute the garlic and onion until limp.
  3. Add- in the ground beef, break up any clumps, and cook until the meat is no longer pink.
  4. Add- in the chili powder, curry powder, dried thyme, paprika powder, sugar, nutmeg powder, and ground pepper then cook for 1 minute.
  5. Add- in the bread crumbs, water, and beef cube then season with salt.
  6. Let it cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until all water is gone and only the oil is left (it should be moist but not watery and remove excess oil if needed).
  7. Preheat your oven at 400 F or 200 C.
  8. Cut the puff pastry into 6 squares.
  9. On a floured surface, flatten each square a bit using a rolling pin.
  10. Fold a square piece into a triangle and unfold again.
  11. Fill one triangle with the ground beef filling, leaving about half centimeter from the edge unfilled.
  12. Fold the other triangle on top of the filling and pinch the edges with a fork to seal.
  13. Place the patties on a baking tray lined with a parchment paper.
  14. Lightly brush the pastry with the egg wash.
  15. Poke small holes on each patty using a fork to prevent them from bursting open while baking.
  16. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until the pastry gets puffy and turns golden.
  17. Turn the patties to bake the other side for another 5 minutes or until golden.
  18. Remove from the oven and serve warm. Enjoy!
